中文里的”私奔”在英文里可以用elope来表示，elope在英文中有两层含义：（1）to run away from one’s husband with a lover：与情人（情夫）私奔，逃离自己的丈夫。（2）to run away secretly with the intention of getting married usually without parental consent.（秘密逃跑，目的是为了不经父母的同意而结婚。）
事实上，私奔的原因其实不止以上两种，有的时候，私奔仅仅是为了：just wanting to have a more intimate and quiet wedding（举办一个更加私密、安静的婚礼），而非传统的、形式化的婚礼。
除了elope外，也可以说run away (to get married)。另外，和某人私奔，通常用介词with。参考英语例句：Sally eloped with Tom, and everyone was surprised.（Sally和Tom私奔了，所有人都未能料到。）
