Up the ante是一个常见的美语口语表达，意思是：加码、加大赌注。常用其引申含义，表示：投入更多、押上更多。其英文解释为：to raise the opening stakes in a betting game.（在下注类游戏中加大筹码。）up在这里的意思是“提高”（to raise; go better than），作为动词；而ante则是“赌注”之意。

美语学习tips：Look back on something，意思是“回顾某事”。参考例句：As I look back on my life, I realize how truly lucky I was growing up in the 80’s and 90’s.（当我回顾一生，我意识到能在80和90年代长大是件多么幸运的事。）Statistics的意思是：统计数据、统计学。投资大师彼得·林奇的投资风格与“股神”巴菲特有些类似，比较看重股票的基本面（fundamentals），而非股价的短期波动（或价格走势），所以林奇得出了上述结论。

Contingent upon(on)是什么意思?

Contingent upon的意思是：取决于。注意upon也可以换成on。Contingent upon的英文意思类似于：depending on。参考Hyperdictionary.com的解释：determined by conditions or circumstances not yet established（由尚不具备的条件或环境所决定）。注意contingent在这里是形容词，常用：be contingent upon的形式。参考例句：

Our plans are contingent on the weather.（我们的计划取决于天气）

The arms sales are contingent on the approval of congress（军火销售取决于国会的审批）

Contingent作为形容词时，还有一个常用的固定搭配：contingent expenses。中文常翻译为：“或有费用”。（即：该费用有可能发生，也可能不发生。possible but not certain to occur。）如：they had to plan for contingent expenses. （他们不得不规划或有费用）。另外，Contingency Plan的意思是：应急计划。是风险管理重要组成部分。

值得注意的是，Contingent也可作为名词，其意思为：代表、（军事）小分队。比如：each nation sent a contingent of athletes to the Olympics（每个国家派遣一位运动员代表参与奥运会）。the peace-keeping force includes one British contingent（维和部队包括一支英国小分队）。
